D.E.A.R

We have started a new program in Room 8,  Drops Everything And Reads (D.E.A.R)! For 20 minutes, all of us grab a book or two and read. It is very fascinating to see 4-5 years old read quietly for this amount of time:-)!

Our New Inquiry Focus...

We have started our Sound inquiry. To spark the interest we had few glass jars and glasses filled with different amount of water and a wooden stick. Today was the third day, and some of our friends have already started to compose their own music!

What's new in Room 8...

We welcomed our new ECE student teacher, Mrs. Kennedy to our kinder team. She will be with us until the first week of June.

We turned our drama centre into Tim Hortons... Students will learn about money, measurement (different sizes of cups) and capacity. They will also learn to interact with each other in public setting, the norm of the restaurant and the roles of the server and the customer. To incorporate Language, we made our menu and signs. Students will get lots of opportunity to communicate orally and to think critically about the kind of language and vocabulary that the adults use in this kind of settings.

Little Naturalists!

Yesterday, our friends in Kindergarten became Naturalist and were looking for living and non-livings things that we can find in our environment. We used our tools i.e. magnifying glasses and Popsicle sticks careful to make sure that we don't disturb the bugs and their habitats. Some kids found interesting rocks and some discovered anthills. As the weather gets better, we will be going on the nature walks to investigate and learn more about the changes that Spring brings to our environment.

Learning about people of Canada...

On Friday, we had a presentation by an Inuit presenter. He talked about where his ancestors came from, where they live, and the animals that they depend upon. Students touched the artifacts that he brought, few students had the chance to use the drums and we all played an Inuit game! Here is a snapshot of the presentation...

Goodbye Sucheta!

On Friday, we said goodbye to our ECE student teacher Sucheta. She was a wonderful addition to our Kindergarten team! We will miss her!

What we were up to...

We have been very busy in Room 8 despite of the weather we had (Snow day in April... Hmm Seriously!!!).

We baked banana bread, made flubber, opened flower shop, measured the length of our classroom, wrote survey questions and tallied the results. Wondered, predicted and investigated if the object will sink or float! We also made collages using scrap papers with our reading buddies.
We have been learning about how to take care of our environment and our planet Earth as a whole. In coming weeks we will learn about reducing, reusing and recycling everyday garbage.

Here are some of the snapshots of our learning and exploring...
